Heart

Written, Produced & Directed by Jason Goodman

No one wanted to do Heart’s Behind The Music – because their story didn’t have the rock ‘n roll excess that had the series had become known for. I volunteered for one simple reason – Ann & Nancy fucking rock, in every sense of the word. It was a pleasure to be welcomed into their world and tell their story.

But then a funny thing happened – the show fell together in just a magical way. Thanks to Ann and Nancy giving me all their personal hi-8 footage, I was able to craft an intimate film that I think really captures their essence. It’s my personal favorite Behind The Music, and Ann & Nancy told me how much they loved it, too.

After our first interview, my executive producer was unhappy there weren’t more drug references. So I went back to Nancy. “How can we speak bad about pot” she asked? “We were high when we wrote some of our biggest songs!”

Heart may not have had a lot of excess, but no question that Ann Wilson has fought her own very public battle during her long, successful career. I wrestled with how to approach her weight issues, and I think it would be safe to say it was Ann was really nervous about that part of the show. But I found her story moving and tried to convey that, and others have told me that this act made them more sympathetic to the plight of the overweight. That’s not bad for a little TV show.

Heart’s Behind The Music had a big snafu. After I got back from a multi-day shoot in Seattle and doing virtually every interview needed for the show, I got a call from VH1 telling me there was a technical issue with the camera we were using. Although the image looked fine when I watched playback through the camera, the footage was ultimately unusable. So back I went to Seattle, where a few weeks later, we had to shoot all the interviews again. I don’t think the show suffered appreciably because of it, but at least when it got to the juicier parts of the inter-band romances, the stories did not get better the second time around.
