Dude on the Corner

Written and Produced by Jason Goodman

I met Amy and Jeff in Austin, Texas, where they were living with Amy’s sister and brother-in-law, and and their combined family of six kids. Jeff decided to put a desk on a flatbed truck he had access to, and put up a website called “Dude on the Corner.” That got him on local news, and that caught the eye of someone at Dr. Phil.

At a time when the stock market was through the roof, this story was a rare reminder of what can happen to people who have no safety net. As part of the story, I flew to Colorado Springs to film the house and life they had left behind. The new owner let me in, and it had quite an effect on me – realizing that these now homeless people I had met in Austin had lived in this very home less than a year before.

If you need any example of the limited amount of help these kind of shows can offer someone – check out what happened when I went back in a follow-up visit – and ended up filming Dr. Phil getting scammed.
